Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – “Dear Ijeawele” and Raising a Child to Be a Feminist | The Daily Show – YouTube

Following my teacher suggestion, in this post I’m going to write down, at least two paragraphs, about my reflections of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s interview to The Daily Show.

💡Hey, feel free to suggest any adjustments or corrections in my text using the comments at bottom of the page. I’m learning English, after all.

I never heard about Chimamanda Ngozi before watched this video and I confess that was amazing to know about her story into about feminism. Her interview made me think about this theme that I confess haven’t enough depth and knowledge.

The first insight is that I agree that word “Feminism” is frequently related to negative things like “hate to men” or “women being crazy”, but actually this word is broader than the common sense imagine. For instance, how the women are excluded from the main men activities. So, we need to name it from what it really means.

Chimamanda was publicizing his her book “Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions” a book that helps women that want to learn how to raise their child children to be a feminist but don’t know how to start. In this opportunity Chimamanda shares fifteen suggestions to everyone put in practice the feminism without be extremist or rigid, because in my opinion when we don’t know something, the soft approach is always better and inclusive, even in this topic.

Few suggestions in from the book:

  • We should open the cars’ doors to everyone, men and women. Not only to women. It looks like that women are weak and need protection. 1
  • Never speak to a child that marriage as an achievement. We raise girls to aspire to marriage, but the same not happen to boys.

The interesting thing is that men can read it too. Even the author said that “men need to participate”. After all, if men don’t change, nothing will change in her words.

  1. In my opinion: we must be clear, there a lot of strong women in the world (more than men). Said that, in my opinion the act to open the cars’ doors to women is a kind of kindness. Despite it being outdated. ↩︎
